Down Vs. Down Alternative Pillow

October 20, 2016

There are few things as satisfying as laying your head down on a soft fluffy pillow at the end of a long hard day. While you may not actually think about it, the outside of your pillow does very little to add to your sleeping experience. It is the filling that is doing the majority of the work.

There are two main kinds of pillow filling: down filling and down alternative filling. Down filling is made up of organic material and down alternative is made of synthetic material. Both of these materials have their upsides and their downsides. In order for you to get the pillow that is best suited for you, we have broken down the differences between the two.

Down Pillows

Down is the feather of waterfowl, whether it be duck, geese, etc. that is found beneath the top protective layer of feathers known as quill. Many people love down because it is extremely fluffy and warm. It also happens to be far lighter than down alternative fillings. On the other hand, many people do not like how expensive down pillows tend to be in comparison to down alternatives. There is also the matter of allergies. People who are allergic to down can have difficulty sleeping on them. Whereas they tend to have little to no issues using down alternative pillows.

Down Alternative Pillows

Down alternative pillows are usually filled with synthetic material like polyester fibers. Because of this, these pillows tend to be far less expensive than regular down pillows. They are also easier to maintain and clean because they can be washed in your washing machine like the rest of your bedding. Alternatively, they are simply not as fluffy and comfortable in most people’s opinion. Regardless of which you prefer, they are both sure to provide you with warmth and support for your head and neck.
