Get All The Dirt On How To Properly Care For Your Bedding

February 01, 2017

With the new year just around the corner, many people are taking this time to start thinking about ways they can improve their own lives. Isn’t this the entire reason that new year’s resolutions are all about? Finding ways to make yourself healthier, happier and just overall, better? With that in mind, we thought we may be able to give you some tips as to how you can make your home, and specifically your bed, better where your health is regarded. So, let’s talk about how you should be cleaning your bedding for best results in 2017.

When it comes to washing your sheets regularly, you can do it as often as you like. For some, washing their sheets once a week is fairly common, where with other people, they choose to do so every other week. Regardless of which you choose, you do not want to go longer than two weeks without washing your sheets. With as much time as you spend in them, you can be sure that they are covered in a variety of things that you want to know absolutely nothing about. When it comes to temperature, make sure that you are always washing your sheets in warm water. You don’t want to use hot as it may shrink the fibers, as well as fade the color of your sheets. You can also turn things like pillow cases inside out so that they do not fade in color as well. When you dry your sheets, you may want to check out the the instructions on the label. Always make sure that your sheets are completely dry when you remove them from the dryer. If you don’t, you may be dealing with a mildew situation, and no one wants to sleep on stinky and musty sheets.

Duvets & Comforters

When you are dealing with duvet covers and any other covers such as shams, you want to make sure that you follow the protocol that you would use when washing sheets. This means warm water and turning any shams inside out to avoiding fading and just general damage. On the other hand, if you are washing a comforter, you should be washing it no more than once every couple years. To prevent things like allergens, dirt and other mysterious things from making a permanent home on the blanket you sleep beneath every night be sure to keep comforters in a duvet cover and wash the cover instead. Even when done correctly, washing down comforters significantly wears on the product. Every time a down comforter is washed the oils get stripped off the down which results in a decrease in loft. A loss in loft translates to a decrease in warmth, often to the point that people need a new comforter to stay comfortable through those cold nights. Most down alternative comforters should be fairly simple to wash, just be prepared that the comforter may come out of the dryer a big lumpy mess. Regardless of the quality of polyester down alternative comforters have a tendency to clump up after being washed. With that being said, it is often not a great idea to air dry a comforter because you could absolutely end up with a blanket filled with mildew. So be sure to reserve about four hours when drying down comforters and 2 hours when drying polyester comforters. The reason this process takes so long is simply a result of having to dry on an "air fluff" cycle. Remember to do this properly no heat should be used in the washing or drying process.

Know When To Replace Bedding

While washing your bedding properly can definitely make its lifespan longer, you should also keep in mind that bedding does wear out with extensive use. On average comforters will last 10 years depending on the quality of the down and how it is cared for. Alternatively, down pillows have a significantly shorter shelf life at 3 three years. The reason for this is pillows get more wear being slept on every night, whereas comforters are slept underneath.
