Memory Foam vs. Feather... Which is Better?

In today’s battle of the bedding, we’re putting memory foam and feather into the ring! Both of these cozy materials are commonly utilized in mattresses, bed toppers, and / or pillows. They're some of the most comfortable materials hence why they're used to create our bed products! We've been asked "which is better: memory foam or feather" and to make it fair, the short answer is - neither are 'better'!

While they serve the same purpose, both materials are different in their own way. Really it's all down to your own personal preference! Don't get us wrong - there are advantages to both materials, so we're going to get more into that in this blog.

Without any further ado, let's get into the battle of memory foam vs feather!

Memory Foam

When testing out beds or pillows, chances are you've come across a memory-foam product. If you've ever pushed your hand down on a bed to test it out and noticed that your handprint was still there after removing it, then it's likely that it was a memory-foam product! Memory foam is a bit firm at first, however, as you press on it, you slowly start to sink in and it feels incredible. As the name suggests, the foam seems to memorize the part of you that was on it - perfectly surrounding you with the rest of the product. It's basically taking a mold of your body!

  • Production: Memory foam is made by taking polyurethane foam and injecting it with various chemicals to increase its elasticity and density
  • What makes it so special?: Memory foam is especially a great option for those that suffer from neck and back pain as it offers maximum support and creates a neutral spine alignment. This material softens when it comes in contact with heat, making it easy to mold to your body
  • Pros: Provides a unique softness, firmness, and warmth, making it a great option for those that are looking for a restful night’s sleep since it literally conforms to you
  • Cons: Due to its design, memory foam retains heat much more than your average material. This can be great in the winter, but perhaps a little too warm in the summer. Since you “sink” into the material, some report that it can be difficult to move around the bed or get up because of it

One product that we love being made with memory foam materials is slippers! We love it so much that we even sell some!

Tamarac by Slippers International Women's Cozy Clog Shearling Slipper:

Our Clog Shearling Slippers are some of (if not) the coziest slippers possible! The outside of the slipper is made from soft suede while the inside is made from memory foam cushioning. As you walk, your feet will feel warm, soft, and more comfortable than most shoes! These are slip-ons, so they're super easy to get on and off quickly. The bottom of the slippers have flexible rubber soles, so you're able to use these both indoors and outdoors. (No one is going to judge if you stop at the supermarket in these... They'll just be jealous!)

Feather

If you prefer to sleep on a fluffy pillow or mattress, and enjoy sleeping on something that feels 'cloud-like', then you may prefer feather to memory foam. Products made with feathers tend to be softer than memory foam products. As we mentioned, we often describe feather as clouds... It's extremely soft and you can fluff up your pillow to feel just like a big, fluffy clouds! Feather products are some of our all-time favorites!

  • Production: Feather is a natural byproduct generally made with goose or duck feathers
  • What makes it so special?: Feather products are best known for being extremely soft, light, breathable, and fluffy. Its design aids in regulating body temperature and keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter
  • Pros: In terms of longevity, natural materials like feather usually outperform synthetics, such as memory foam. They are also cheaper in price and the shape can be altered and “fluffed”
  • Cons: Unfortunately, due to the way it’s produced, feather products aren’t a good option for those that suffer from allergies because they can easily trap dust. They also lack in support compared to memory foam

Unfortunately, many people are against feather products because sometimes they are produced irresponsibly. However, here at Warm Things, we do things differently. We care about animals and their safety, so we produce down the right way. We do not harm any animals and we source our feathers ethically. As we mentioned in a previous blog, some companies don’t following ethical practices when it comes to producing down products, which then leads to a lot of misconception in the market - hence why many people are against it.

Here at Warm Things, our pillows and comforters are responsibly sourced and we fully respect the humane treatment of ducks and geese. We ensure that absolutely no animals are harmed in the making of our products!

Animals are important to us and we want to ensure that our customers know this! For more information on how our feather products are sourced, please check out our blog here.
