With our bedding comes a world of possibilities. Determining your personal wants and needs starts with understanding the different types of bedding that are available. One of the most widely used are duvet covers, as they come in many forms and serve a variety of purposes. When shopping for a duvet, customers are presented with some questions…what’s a duvet and why should I buy one? Is it essential that I purchase a cover? How do I put a duvet cover on? At Warm Things, we are here to help…

What is a Duvet?

Duvet, also known as an insert, comes from the French word for down, which still remains a very popular filling for duvets. However, today you can find duvets in an assortment of materials including wool, feathers, or a synthetic alternative (providing a hypoallergenic option).

What is a Duvet Cover?

Simply put, a duvet cover is to a duvet as a pillowcase is to a pillow. The cover is what slips over your duvet, serving as a protective layer and the most visible part of your bedding. Purchasing a cover is recommended as they help with the overall care and look of your duvet. They are machine washable, inexpensive, comfortable, and easy to switch out if you get bored of one style.

Duvet vs. Comforter

A common misconception about duvets and comforters is that they are synonymous. Duvets tend to be warm, but surprisingly lightweight. The duvet cover makes it easier to change your bedding appearance. They also tend to be fluffier than comforters and are easier to care for and manage. Comforters are generally flatter than duvets. With no protective cover, they require regular washing. They are a simpler option, which some prefer.

How to put on a duvet cover

Filling a duvet cover can be a tricky task if not done properly. To fill your duvet, you’ll need a cover and an insert such as a down or down-alternative. The first step is to make sure that your duvet insert is the same size as your cover. This avoids any unnecessary clumping or your duvet to be out of place within the cover. Now, follow these simple steps to fill your cover:

  • Step 1: Lay the duvet flat on top of your mattress
  • Step 2: Take your duvet cover and turn it inside out. Insert your hands inside and find the two top corners. You should be holding one corner in each hand
  • Step 3: With your hands inside the duvet cover, reach down to grab hold of the comforter’s top two corners
  • Step 4: Holding the top two corners tightly, flip the duvet cover right side out over the comforter. Give it a shake and a fluff until the duvet cover falls down to cover most of the comforter
  • Step 5: Pull the duvet cover down. Stuff the bottom two corners of the comforter inside the bottom two corners of the duvet cover. Once everything is aligned, zip or button it up!
