January 06, 2020

At the start of every new year, people sit down and compile of list of resolutions they have to better themselves. The majority of these goals include exercising more, saving money, eating healthier, or losing weight. However, one thing you can do every day to take care of yourself is to simply sleep. On average, adults need eight hours of sleep a night. To accomplish your resolution for 2020, here are some steps you can take to ensure you wake up each morning feeling rested and ready to take on the day:

  • Lose the alarm clock

While most people use an alarm clock, it’s recommended not to as it can lead to sleep deprivation. When an alarm clock goes off, it can affect your deepest stages of sleep, abruptly pulling you out of consciousness and increasing your heart rate and blood pressure.

  • Get light exposure

When you expose yourself to light in the morning, it can promote wakefulness and change your overall mood for the day. It’s best to get indirect light as opposed to staring directly into the sun. Depending on your location and time of the year, consider purchasing a light box for similar effects.

  • Drink caffeine

If you’re like most Americans, you start your day with a nice cup of coffee. Coffee contains caffeine, which can have useful alerting properties, helping your body wake up. If you’re like me and don’t like a cup of brew, consider alternatives like hot chocolate, tea, or soda.

  • Eat breakfast

Having breakfast is a smart and healthy way to wake yourself up since food can help give you the burst of energy you need to get your day going.

  • Maintain a regular sleep schedule

Keeping to a regular sleep schedule is also a wonderful resolution to have for yourself. Our bodies prefer to follow a regular pattern so reinforce your sleep by going to bed and getting up at the same time each day. This will also help to keep your circadian rhythm, or internal clock, on track.

  • Treat your sleep disorders

If you are someone who struggles with a sleep disorder, it’s very important to see a doctor or specialist to receive appropriate treatment. You can learn more about common sleep disorders and symptoms here.

  • Exercise and be active

Getting more exercise is generally one of the most common new year’s resolutions people make. Being active first thing in the morning will alert your body and mind. If possible, get outside for some fresh air and sun to further the benefits.

  • Wake up on your own

The best way to wake up feeling rested is perhaps one of the hardest and that’s to get up on your own. In order to achieve this goal, you must get an adequate amount of sleep. You can read about tips and tricks to a better night’s sleep in our blog here.

Whatever your resolution(s) may be, it’s time to change for the better. Happy New Year from Warm Things!
